Fossil Ridge High School’s boys’ soccer team played their first game against Mountain View on Aug. 31 under the new coach Shannon Clarke; the soccer team beat their opponent 9-0. Coach Clarke decided to do something a typical coach here wouldn’t do; he had the Varsity play the first 20 minutes and the JV team play the rest of the game.

In that designated time the Varsity scored four goals. The rest of the game Clarke put in the JV and they scored five against a varsity team. The coaching staff made a bold move by putting in the JV because if they would’ve lost it would’ve counted as a loss for the varsity team.

Clarke put his team through intense workouts every practice, which consists of intense running and drills to get them all in shape and increase their skills dramatically. As seen from the first game, his methods and strategies are working. These drills are also giving the team great chemistry. Hard workouts also help the team work together and it really gives them the chance to pick each other up and really understand that they are in it together.

“Shannon is one of the best coaches I had and I love playing for him,” senior Trevor Quintana said. “He makes us work hard and we will make it to state.”Quintana plays defense and is the strongest defender Fossil has. The good thing about the new team is that they had a desire to win; they will work together and make it to their goal.

FRHS goal keeper Josh King said, “The team this year has more energy and a better relationship then the teams in the past. We are all very dedicated and willing to work hard. Everyone on the team understands the strengths and weakness’ and they learn off of each other.”
