Fossil’s varsity softball team swung regionals out of the park

With the Sabercats undergoing a devastating loss against Eaglecrest just last week, Fossil Ridge High School’s varsity softball team rebounded impressively by winning their regional competition on Saturday, October 15 at the Lutz Softball Complex in Arvada, Colorado. Going into the state competition, Fossil is currently ranked No. 8 in 5A for the state of the Colorado for high school softball.

In the first and second inning, Fossil started of with a bang when the offense was at it’s best with the help of Jayden Mercado, Rheanna Will and Mia Moddelmog who all scored a home run in the first inning.

With defense only allowing one run to go up on the scoreboard for Grandview, Fossil Ridge scored five runs in the first inning and scored none in the second, leaving the score at the top of the third inning to be 5-1.

In the third inning, Megan Jamison was pitching and up to bat was Paiton Coleman who plays left field and right field for Grandview. With four wrong balls from Jamison, Coleman walked to first base, being the first one on base in the third inning.

Vallejos Amy went up to bat next and was also walked. Fossil unfortunately did not score any runs in the bottom of the third while Grandview scored six runs making the score 5-7.

The fourth and fifth innings involved tension between the Sabercats and the Wolves when Fossil Ridge scored three more points on the leader board and not allowing Grandview to score any throughout the rest of the innings, keeping the bottom of the fourth score to 8-7.

Fossil Ridge High School’s varsity softball team didn’t stop there with adding two more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, making Fossil Ridge in the lead by 10-7.

The sixth and seventh inning the Sabercats ended with a score of 13-7, crushing Grandview in the first game of regional’s.

With the satisfying win against Grandview, Fossil Ridge High School’s varsity softball team followed with a disappointing loss against Mountain Range High School for their second game in regional’s but still had one more game to try and get into state.

In the first and second inning, Fossil was off to a slow start when Mountain Range got two runs in the first inning. Fossil Ridge’s offense wasn’t at their best during this game, especially in the beginning when Rheanna Will went up to bat and got out along with Lanyden Bruce and Hayley Henderson.

In the third and fourth inning, Mountain Range was unsurpassed when they got five points on the scoreboard with the help of the star players; Rylee Younger, Montanna Alley and Hunter Huser. Kristen Reed took one for the team and brought home one run in the third inning for Fossil Ridge.

In the fifth inning,  Fossil got one run on the scoreboard putting Fossil Ridge at 3-7 in the fifth inning. In the sixth and seventh inning, Mountain Range scored 3 points while Fossil Ridge was still standing with three points on the scoreboard, making the final score 3-10, a devastating loss for Fossil Ridge

With the loss against Mountain Range, Fossil Ridge High School’s varsity softball team dominated Grandview High School for the second time in the regional competition. Fossil Ridge High School played in Aurora, Colorado at the annual softball competition on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22.

In the first inning, Grandview scored one point within the first ten minutes of the game, allowing them to take an early 0-1 lead at the end of the first inning..  In the second inning, Grandview and Fossil Ridge battled it out but Fossil Ridge scored one point, tying the game 1-1.

In the third inning and fourth inning, Fossil Ridge scored a total of 4 runs, extending their lead to 5-1.  In the fourth inning, Megan Jamison swung and ran to first base safely. Rheanna Will was next up to bat and hit the softball over the fencing, making Grandview run for the ball while Jamison and Will both made it to home. The score was 7-1 at the end of the fourth inning.

Fossil Ridge’s defense shut down Grandview with not letting any points go up on the scoreboard, putting Fossil Ridge in the lead by 9 runs.

The bottom of the fifth inning, Hayley Henderson was up to bat and hit a home run as well as Rosie Philiop and Jayden Mercado, scoring three runs for the Sabercats.. Fossil Ridge led Grandview 10-4 at the end of the fifth inning.

The sixth and seventh inning, defense shut down Grandview yet again, not letting Grandview even score one run. Fossil Ridge beat Grandview 10-4, scoring a seat to the State Championships in Aurora, Colorado.
