The Fossil Ridge High School Science Olympians placed first in the Northern Colorado Regional Tournament held at Fossil on February 25, 2018. Team one had great success in 21 out of 23 events. The team won fourteen gold medals, five silver medals, and two bronze medals. Team two won one gold medal, six silver medals, and four bronze. Some of the events both teams placed in were Forensics, Mousetrap Vehicle, Hovercraft, Mission Possible, Ecology, and Experimental Design. “I’m super proud of them” said Mrs. Vigil, a coach for Science Olympiad and science teacher at Fossil.

Students who compete in Science Olympiad spend months preparing for tournaments and getting ready for regionals, but that hard work can bring home the gold. Trevor Long, senior, who is on team one, said on winning that it “feels good, but we can definitely do better.” He and his teammate, Kyle Schmer, placed first for team one in Mousetrap Vehicle and second in Towers. In terms of the next step, Long said “everything now is just working towards nationals because that is where it is hardest to win and where it matters the most.”

Nationals this year will be held at Colorado State University on May 19. Mr. Dannahower, Science Olympiad coach and science teacher at Fossil said that,“The team is really excited that nationals, is being held at CSU because it would be awesome to win on home turf.” Show support for the team on May 19 when they compete at Nationals at CSU.
