Fossil Ridge High School hosted the fourth annual Ridge Games on Thursday, April 12. This four and a half hour event included five main events, tribunals to allow teams second chances, and one nail biting competition. Out of 25 hopeful teams, Fossil teachers Kyle Taylor and Halston Drennan were the winning tributes.

The evening began at 7pm with the first event. All 25 teams had 30 minutes to collect as many resources as they could, by completing different challenges around the track outside. Each challenge was centered around a different district’s specialty from the Hunger Games. Nobody was eliminated in the first round, although it determined ranks for the next event.

Event 2:

Event three of the night included the remaining 17 team members competed in various challenges intended to push tributes physically. For the first challenge, contestants took turns taking a scooter to the other side of the gym, grabbing a costume piece, and taking it back to the other side. This continued until one partner was wearing 10 costume pieces, in a race for speed.

A dodgeball race pushed contestants to think creatively and use teamwork, as the second challenge began. Student council members, or “peace keepers,” instructed tributes on how to carry the dodge ball across the gym and back while trying not to drop it.

Various ways in carrying the dodge ball included hip to hip, elbow to elbow, or fingertip to fingertip. Based off the number of times tributes went across the gym, they gained points for their team.

Using riddles, trivia, and more running across the gym, contestants got a final chance to earn points before the next round. They were given trivia questions, which were to be answered by traveling across the gym in a certain way, such as through leap frog or a piggy back ride.

The eight teams with the least amount of points after the event’s three challenges was sent to the tribunal. Here, one tribute from each team played musical chairs with a twist. They had to hold a golf ball on a spoon and if it was dropped, the contestant was eliminated. Many people didn’t want to move during this tribunal, as every step was risking dropping the golf ball or losing their seat.

Mr. Taylor reflects, “No doubt my favorite part was watching Mr. Drennan scarf a donut off a string in two bites. Unbelievable.”
