The cool nighttime breeze fills the air as the overhead lights turn on. You can hear the announcer commentating the play by play action on the field. Smells in the stadium include fresh cut grass and concession stand hotdogs. You can see the smiles of the fans, players, and coaches. This setting took place on an additional night besides Friday this week. Tuesday night at French Field, Fossil and Rocky’s unified flag football teams took the field in this uniquely amazing atmosphere.

There was not one instance of booing or frustrated faces like we are used to seeing during sporting events. The atmosphere was filled completely with positive energy, supportive cheers, and encouragement from everyone. It didn’t matter what school you attend or how you knew the players on the field. Everyone was rooting for the same positive moment; all the players in red and green jerseys playing the fun game of flag football.

Jamie Cook, a senior at Fossil, talks about her favorite part of coming to the unified sporting events. “I love the excitement that the players show on the field and the fans show in the stands. It’s truly a place where everyone comes together to support something larger than themselves.” The score (43-38) showed the offensive clinic put on by both teams with Rocky scoring the final touchdown to win the game. No one at French Field was focused on the score. They were focused on supporting the players no matter what happened.

There was a great turnout from Rocky’s student section bringing in over 60 fans to support the unified players. Fossil’s student section, containing seven individuals, was microscopic compared to their cross town companion. Another chance for people to be a part of this exciting, community impacting event is coming up next Wednesday, September 30th at 6 pm at French Field

This article gave a lot of insight into unified games, and made me want to support Fossil’s team! Nice job explaining the atmosphere and the reason to come.
