Saturday, October 31st was the last cross country race of the season for Colorado High Schools. Fossil Ridge runners were able to distinguish themselves as some of the best long distance runners in the state as they competed with athletes from other high schools in this year’s state meet.
In the 5000m finals for the boys, the Sabercat runners were able to ignite strong finishes across the board. Senior Runner Keaton Schelir finished 12th in the state with an astonishing 16:41.90 time. Not far behind was Dylan Ko who finished 18th. Notable finishes from other Fossil athletes was Jackson Powell (94), Blake Hubert (98), Andrew McClave (108), Will Brausch (119), and Blake Korasick who finished at 138. When senior leader Keaton Schelir was asked how his final state race went Schelir stated, “I think it was a really good last race. Dylan (Ko) and I went out at the front and led the first mile, and then we just hung on from there.”
With outstanding performances all year onher resume’, Sophomore Sydney Teslow was among seven lady Sabercat runners who had a top 200 finish. Teslow led the charge with a 67th place finish. Billie Fogarty earned a 74th place finish, Kate Lammons (81), Ellie Ewer (86), Allison Edwards (106), Anya Tkachenko (109) and Promise Butler (157). A lot of senior athletes are wrapping up the fall season, and competing in their last ever sporting matches. When Senior runner Ellie Ewer was asked if it was sad knowing that was her last high school cross country meet, she responded with, “It was bittersweet, the realization that it was my last meet only hit me right after the race, it’s been through the people I’ve learned to love running.” The boys earned a 12th place finish and the girls pushed their way to 14th place team finish.
