Rocky couldn’t keep up with Fossil Ridge girls basketball

Fossil Ridge High School’s gym was packed and loud with fans from both schools as the girls varsity basketball team took the court against Rocky Mountain High School on Tuesday, January 17.

The starting line up for the Sabercats included Ashley Steffeck, Katey Guzman, Kylie Metcalf, Brit Mishak, and Reilly Dunn. The five Sabercats gave the Lobos a run for their money as they pulled ahead and kept the lead throughout the entirety of the first quarter. The first quarter ended with the Sabercats in the lead 12-10.

The second quarter was just as intense as the first quarter. The score was always within 2-3 points but Fossil always kept the lead. Going into halftime, the Sabercats held on to a close 22-19 lead.

The highlight play of the half included the shortest player on Fossil, Katey Guzman, blocking a shot from Gabby McDonald, one of Rocky’s posts. Guzman stole the ball and took it to the opposite end for a shot, she missed the shot but Jorie Vallejo rebounded the ball and put it back up for a basket.

Fossil came out of the locker room determined to bring home the win. The Sabercats brought high energy to the court as they extended their lead over the Lobos. With aggressive offense and defense, Fossil was able to end the third quarter 39-26.

Both teams continued to put up a fight as the fourth and final quarter of the game went on but another cross-town rival game ended with a win for Fossil. The Sabercats beat the Lobos 51-41.
