On Tuesday, January 9, Fossil Ridge took on Loveland High School in their third game of twenty-eighteen. After a close first half, the boys were able to pull away in the second, and take a (61-46) win over the Indians.

In the first quarter of play, Brandon Lambrecht and Holdyn Kawcak, both starting players for the SaberCats, pushed Fossil ahead early, with (2 pts) and (3 pts) respectively, in the first two minutes of the game.

The ball went back and forth across the court, but Loveland struggled to sink their shots, while Fossil’s offense was on fire. Junior Tommy Croft drew (3) fouls late in the first, and drained a layup with 1:50 left before the second quarter. Fossil took a (17-14) lead over the Indians.

Senior Garrett Ripsam had a steal early in the second quarter of play; the ball was chucked to Drew Cornesser on a breakaway, and Cornesser secured another (2 pts) for the Cats off of a layup on that play. On Fossil’s next possession, Lambrecht drained a shot racking up (2 pts); Fossil was holding a (21-17) lead.

With 3:42 left in the first half, Sam Osius made an appearance, and hit a (3 pt) shot. Kawack found himself on the line, hitting (2/2) shots late in the second quarter. Ripsam subbed back into the game after a short break, and after draining two (3 pt) shots, gave Fossil a (33-24) lead going into halftime.

After an interview, Lambrecht, a senior and three year veteran of the Fossil Ridge basketball program, stated, “One of the biggest things that is expected of us is energy and effort. Most of our practices are based around that, and because of that we’re starting to see that same intense energy translating into our game play.”

With (4 pts) early in the third quarter from Kawcak, followed by (2 pts) from Ripsam, the SaberCats separated themselves from the Indians by       (11 pts), taking a (47-36) lead.

In the fourth quarter, senior Calvin Marley came in clutch for the SaberCats. With (10 pts) in the game, he was a force underneath the basket. His energy and intensity carried the team to the final whistle.

After dominating the second half of the game, with hard work and creative play in Loveland’s paint, Fossil came away with a (61-46) win.

We played really well against them, we made sure to play our own game at our pace, and not let them dictate how the game was going to be played

Lambrecht commented, “We played really well against them, we made sure to play our own game at our pace, and not let them dictate how the game was going to be played. With that said, we could definitely improve on giving full effort for all four quarters of play. We usually play really hard for three out of the four, which can have an impact on the outcome; but I’m proud of the outcome tonight, and am excited to take on Poudre next.”
