Fossil’s chance at State all depends on another team

Denver bound on Friday, November 10 the Fossil Ridge High School volleyball team were in high spirits as they got sent off by parents, students, and the Fossil cheer team. The girls hugged their families goodbye before they headed onto the bus to go to the Denver Coliseum. Junior varsity players Rachel Lambrecht, Rachel Lueck, Jessica Chesrown, and Peyton Dunn joined the varsity team for the tournament.

Before warm-ups senior captain Tyler Lindgren shared her thoughts on going into the day. “Kind of nervous, but pretty excited. I think that because it’s the second time around there’s more pressure. But, I think everyone on the team is really going to step up because we’re really starting to play like a team right now.” The girls and coaches were full of excitement, nervousness, or a combination of both as they took the warm-up courts before their first game.

The first game of the day was against Denver East High School, a team Fossil had previously played and beat earlier in the season. The energy was electric when both teams stepped onto the court, Denver East ready to redeem themselves and the Sabercats ready to defend their state title. Fossil took the lead in the first set and maintained it until the end of the set. The Angels overpowered Fossil at the end of the set and took the set. Fossil lost 23-25, a close set for the Sabercats.

Second set started off and Fossil fell behind. Although the Sabercats played strong, Denver East played harder and faster than Fossil. The Angels overpowered the Sabercats from the beginning of the set and kept their lead over them until the end. Another loss for Fossil, 22-25.

Fossil came out strong from the beginning of the third set and kept climbing even though Denver East held their lead. In the middle of the set Fossil finally took the lead over the Angels, however they once again fell to Denver East. An unfortunate first game for Fossil as they lost to Denver East 20-25 in the third set. This meant that in order for Fossil to advance to the semifinals tomorrow Chatfield High School would have to beat Denver East and then Fossil would have to beat Chatfield.

The girls would play again at 5:00 P.M. against Chatfield to determine whether or not Fossil would advance into the next round.

After an hour delay Fossil took the court against Chatfield at 6:00 P.M. Fossil had knocked Chatfield out of the semi-finals last year, now a year later they faced off on the court with a chance to knock Fossil out of the playoffs.

The first set started with Fossil taking and holding a lead over Chatfield, which set a great tone for the match. An amazing set for junior Riley Zuhn, whose powerful spikes helped Fossil take a win over Chatfield. The Sabercats took the set 25-17, the first win for Fossil for the day.

Chatfield gave Fossil a harder fight in the second set, not taking a lead over the Sabercats until the end of the set. The Chargers eventually overpowered and held their lead over Fossil until the end of the set. A loss for Fossil, 19-25.

Fossil took a lead from the beginning and held it, dominating the court with their strong offensive line. The Chargers tried to take a lead over the Sabercats, however Fossil was in this to win it. The Sabercats took the third set 25-16.

Although it looked like Fossil would take the game in the fourth set, Chatfield once again overpowered the Sabercats. The fourth set was a give and take as Fossil would take a lead just to lose it and regain it again. Ultimately the Chargers took the lead and kept over the Sabercats in the end. Fossil lost the set 19-25, which sent both teams into a fifth and final set.

Last year going into the final for the State Championship title Fossil also went into five sets and came out victorious, this game was no different. The Sabercats came out strong and were able to keep their lead from the beginning. Fossil took the set 15-6, sending them into the next round tomorrow.

If Chatfield beats Denver East in tomorrow’s game this would put Fossil, Chatfield and Denver East into a three-way tie. However if Denver East beats Chatfield, both Fossil and Chatfield will not be competing in the semifinals tomorrow.

Fossil Ridge High School went into the State tournament on Saturday, November 11 unsure on whether or not they would be playing at all that day. However, after a nerve wracking game they watched Chatfield High School beat Denver East High School which sent them all into a set of tie-breakers. Fossil won both of their tie-breakers, going into the semifinals to play all five sets and suffer a devastating loss in the fifth set.

Fossil would play Chatfield and then the winner of that 25 point set would go on to play Denver East. Both Fossil and Chatfield had everything to lose if they had lost this set, Fossil gave it their all and pulled ahead in the beginning of the set. This lead stuck and the Sabercats went on to beat the Chargers 25-17. Sending them into their final tie-breaker against the Denver East Angels.

After losing to Denver East in the first game of the day yesterday Fossil came out with a vengeance to win and defend their State title. The game was a back and forth of Fossil pulling ahead by one then Denver East pulling ahead by one. It was in the final three points of the set that Fossil eventually pulled ahead and beat the Angels. The Sabercats advanced to the semifinals with a score of 25-22.

Fossil played Castle View High School in the semifinals in a game that went into an intense five sets. Castle View won the first set, pulling ahead of the Sabercats from the beginning and maintaining ahead until they took the set, Fossil lost 16-25. The second set Fossil pulled ahead and won in the very end of the set, taking the second set 25-20. It was Castle View who ended up stealing the third set from Fossil in the final two points, 23-25. Another close set for both teams in the fourth set but the Sabercats pulled ahead and won the set 25-20. The fifth and final set was an upset for the team and fans alike. The girls put up a good fight but got knocked out 8-15, Castle View went on to the play for the championship and Fossil had to say goodbye to their season.

It was an outstanding season of volleyball for the Sabercats and they made it into the final four teams in the state. Make sure to show your Sabercat pride and congratulate a volleyball player on their season. Good job ladies and good luck next year.
