The Fossil Ridge soccer team fought hard to secure a 1-0 victory against the physical Windsor Wizards on Tuesday August 31, 2021.

The only goal was scored by Saber cats defender Ricardo Peres.

“I threw that ball in and got it right back at my feet…there was no one on me, no one on my back, so I just wanted to put it in,” Peres said.

The Saber cats faced their toughest test of the year, barely edging out an aggressive Windsor team. Both teams played a very physical style of play. Fossil was handed two yellow cards and the Wizards also received one.

“…you just can’t let it get into your head…you just got to push through,” Peres said.

The Saber cats were the primary attackers throughout the majority of the game. Fossil got the majority of the corner kicks and quality scoring chances.

The biggest push from Fossil Ridge came from their midfielders, as they were able to outmuscle the Windsor midfield. By having an advantage in headers and 50/50 balls, the Saber cats were able to gain extra possessions for their forwards.

“Our midfielders held their midfield back, so we had a lot of space and were able to play through that,” Peres said.

Once trailing 1-0, the Wizards made some significant pushback. Despite the several prime scoring opportunities, the Fossil defense held strong, not allowing any goals past to hold the shutout.

The Fossil Ridge soccer team will play again on Thursday, September 2, on the road against Silver Creek.
