On Thursday, September 16, the Fossil Ridge Sabercats won their first game of the season on the road against Eaglecrest 27-23.

Fossil team huddle before the game

The Sabercats started off the game slow offensively, only crossing midfield once. But, they made that one drive worth it, with a touchdown pass from Tyler Kubat to Domenic Leone.

Fossil’s defense was able to keep pace, coming up with several big stops. Eaglecrest only scored twice, as the Sabercats would trail 10-7 heading into halftime.

Fossil started slow, as Eaglecrest was the first to score in the 2nd half.  After missing the extra point Fossil fell behind further 16-7.

The momentum shifted on the very next play, as running back Michael Doyle would take the kickoff to the house, running 90-plus yards for the touchdown. The Sabercats started to play loosely and with more confidence.

Eaglecrest scored one more time, but Fossil would outdo them adding another two passing touchdowns. Both touchdowns were scored by Junior receiver Trek Keyworth.

I got a chance to speak with Keyworth about how he was able to get open for both scores.

“It’s the play calls, the right play calls at the right time and the quarterback[Tyler Kubat] throwing dimes, that’s all there is to it,” Keyworth said.

When asked about the game as a whole, Trek Keyworth owed the success to a complete team effort.

“We just had to fight through the end. We had a little struggle in the first half but in the second half we came out and we played with a lot of effort and heart, our defense came up big at the goal line,” Keyworth said.

There is now a newfound confidence within the Fossil team, as they will look to build on this win and ride the momentum for the rest of the season.

“I’m excited, I think we got a lot of potential…you got to watch out for the Fossil Ridge Sabercats,” Keyworth said.
