The Fossil Boys Basketball Team defeated the Monarch Coyotes 69-47, improving their record at home to 10-0.

Fossil started off on the right foot, as they led 33-15 at halftime. A big part of their lead came from Junior Colin Hayes, who scored 16 of his 22 points in the first half.

“This was our second conference game, it was a big game for us, that was good motivation,” Hayes said.

Hayes not only contributed on the offensive end, but played a pivotal role on defense as well. Hayes was responsible for guarding Monarch’s best player, and was a big part of holding Monarch to only 15 points in the first 16 minutes.

“I always come with the mindset of ‘I’m gonna lock somebody down’, that really helps me [lock in] throughout the whole game,” Hayes said.

After leading by 18 at halftime, the Sabercats refused to back down. They continued to put pressure on the Coyotes, expanding their lead up to 33 points. While Monarch reduced the deficit late, Fossil already had the game won.

“We kept our energy up…kept our foot on the gas,” Hayes said.

Despite Fossil being ranked 2nd in 5A with a 13-1 record, boasting an 8-game win streak, the Sabercats are still not satisfied.

“Confidence is good, but we gotta keep going. We can’t give up yet,” Hayes said.

Fossil will travel to play Loveland on Friday, January 21.
