Sue Bird has been called one of the best players in WNBA history and is openly a lesbian.

Sue Bird

Sue Bird was born in 1980, and developed a love for sports early on in her childhood. She started playing basketball in sixth grade. She continued playing basketball in high school, and went on to win the national title, along with the New York State Championship and New York State Player of the Year. She then went to University of Connecticut, but tore her ACL in her freshman year. She recovered, and went on to help the university win multiple championships and awards. She joined the Seattle Storm in 2002, and in 2004 the team won the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) championship. She was named one of the top fifteen WNBA players of all time in 2011. Bird had knee surgery in 2013, and after recovery, rejoined with Seattle and was named one of the best WNBA players in its twenty year history. Bird had two more knee surgeries before her last season in 2022, where she accomplished having played the most seasons in the WNBA. She retired the same year. Bird also played on the U.S. women’s Olympic team five times, winning gold each time. At the Games, she met U.S. women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe, and the two began dating. Bird came out as lesbian in 2017, and the couple announced their engagement in 2020.
