Fossil Ridge has always been a big basketball school, but it isn’t just the boys teams that can pull off a strong season. The girls JV and varsity teams are bringing the heat to the court this year. On Friday, January 8, both teams played intense, hard games resulting in two wins against the Monarch High School Coyotes.
With Katey Guzman and Kylie Metcalf scoring a good amount of the team’s baskets, it was almost an easy win for the Sabercats. The first half of the game was a bit more nail biting than the second, with even play as well as possession for both teams holding on to and making smart plays with the ball. With half a dozen break-aways and high pressure defense the Fossil Ridge girls were leading Monarch 27-19 at half. With the blow of the whistle motioning the start of the second half, the Sabercats took the game from the very beginning. Keeping their high pressure defense, which led to many interceptions and break-aways towards Monarch’s basket by a very fast and aggressive Sabercat offense, as well as putting forth strong defensive efforts, the girls finished the game with a killer 62-33 win.
Talk about a group of females in beast mode. Our varsity girls lined up against Monarch’s varsity team with guns blazing. The entire game was played with hard fowls, jersey pulling, scratching, and of course the crazy yelling and screaming of the fans and parents in the stands watching. This game was a spectacle of two very evenly skilled teams, and there wasn’t a moment of watching when there wasn’t 100 percent effort being giving from both schools. At half Fossil was up 25-21. The second half was even more brutal with almost completely equal time of possession from both teams, but with the solid defense the Sabercats played with, they held off the Coyotes pulling out a 53-42 win. Overall the night was successful for both teams. It was good to see and good for the teams to walk away with a “W” after a rough last week of games.
