The Fossil Ridge High School Girl’s Basketball stepped up their game this week, competing against Greeley West High last night January, 26 and they stole the game away from the very beginning. The win followed a stellar performance last week, as Sami Steffeck broke the Fossil record against Legacy for most points scored in one game, and JV had a strong week as well.

Starting players for JV were Zaeleigh Barela, Jorie Vallejo, Kiara Ogden, Riley Dunn, and Kiley Metcal. The game started out slow, but by the end of the first quarter, the score sat at 9-4, Fossil in the lead. Further into the second quarter the Sabercats picked it up a bit and by the end of the first half they were up 29-9. The whistle was blown signaling the beginning of the second half. Katie Townsend, Andrea Nieman, Kaili Menefee, Jacqui Occhiato and Dunn took the court first. The rest of the game the Sabercats played in a zone defense and pretty much waited for Greeley West to turn over the ball or to get a steal. After many steals were made by the team, the girls ran the court time and time again until the game ended, Fossil with the “W” in a 51-11 point game.

Varsity also played a killer game last night, leading Greeley West the entire game with a final score of 70-22. The Sabercats dominated the court and kept their defense strong throughout the entire game. It was a pretty easy win to say the least, the team didn’t play down to Greeley West’s level, they maintained their hard play the whole game.

The girls, both Varsity and JV, are bringing the fire on the court, their teamwork, and ability to compete for an entire game is exciting to watch. This season should bring nothing but intense games and a handful more of earned wins for these girls.
