With barely any open seats last night in Fossil Ridge’s gym, the Sabercats held off their rival, Fort Collins High School, in an exciting 68-55 win.
It started shaky for Fossil Ridge, who fell behind to the Lambkins 16-6 at one point in the first quarter. “We weren’t rebounding,” said senior guard, Jackson Everhart. Everhart had 13 points on the night for the ‘Cats. “They came out with an energy early in the game that we were lacking.”
Fossil responding in the second quarter with huge plays from Braxton Bertolette, the leading scorer of the night with 14 of his 23 points on the night just in the first half. Fossil Ridge came back from an early 10 point deficit, giving themselves a 30-22 lead at half time.
The Lambkins didn’t go down without a fight, losing by just five points at one point in the fourth quarter. Not wanting to repeat a heart breaking loss like last year, the Sabercats pulled away giving themselves a comfortable lead late in the fourth quarter.
“It was one of those games that you’ll look back and remember,” said senior Garrett Schmidt, who had 14 points. “Redeeming ourselves after last year, at home, in front of that type of crowd is unforgettable.”
Fossil Ridge has the opportunity to win the Front Range league this year if they win-out against their next two opponents, Fairview, and Boulder High School.
