After an unexpected loss last week against Bear Creek (1-3) Fossil Ridge (4-1) came out ready for redemption against the Lakewood Tigers Thursday September 29, on French Field. The Sabercats defeated Lakewood 27-14 showing their grit and focus after their previous game. Senior Owen Arkin commented, “We were all feeling good and were ready to get out onto the field again in front of our fans. We all had the juice, we were ready to go.”

Right off the bat, after Evan Bergerson started off the game kicking the ball to the Tigers, the Sabercat defense stunted them on 4 down on their first possession.

Fossil then fired back again, blocking Lakewood s punt and gaining possession on the Tiger’s 6 yard line. After Quarterback Griffin Roberts lacked connection with the Sabercat offense, Bergerson came out to put away a field goal from the 13 yard line; Fossil took an early 3-0 lead.

Roberts along with Brandon Spraberry both picked up a good number of rushing yards. The team worked their way down the field with Roberts leading the Sabercats in confidence. He ended that possession finding Sean Bowerfind in the end zone. Bergerson scored another field goal allowing the Sabercats to pull away 10-0.

Lakewood intercepted a pass from the hands of Roberts, but they failed to put any points on the scoreboard. Junior Donovan Murphree decided to come back out and make a statement, scoring yet another touchdown in this 2016 season. The game seemed to be getting a little out of reach for Lakewood to make a come back after Fossil went up 17-0.

Feeling very comfortable, Roberts ran the ball in getting a touchdown of his own. The Cats towered 24-0 over the Tigers after Bergerson put away another extra point.

Bergerson’s first half wasn’t over yet though. He scored again giving Fossil 3 more points. He went 4/4 in field goals, and made his way off the field smiling as the first half ended. Lakewood came out in the second half and scored two touchdowns trying to make a game out it, but their effort wasn’t quite enough.

Regardless of having a great game himself, Bergerson wasn’t the only player with a smile on his face as the final whistle blew signaling Fossil’s 4 win of the season. Junior Riley Jones commented after the game, “I think this was the first time the whole team put together a complete game. Last week we were flat, and the loss gave us a reality check. This week we came out of the gates strong. Before the game Coach Bigelow told us, ‘…just focus on the now, don’t worry about the next drive or the drive before. Just worry about this one.’ We did that and had great results. With that said there is still a lot of room for improvement and we are going to keep working on that.”

Come support the boys next week as they travel to take on Cherry Creek, Friday October 7!
