On Oct. 6 the national yo-yo tournament was held in Chico, Calif.,  where Fossil Ridge High School junior Zach Gormley made history. He is the youngest competitor to win this competition in 20 years.

Gormley was awarded a very large trophy and medal for winning the competition, and is now ranked number one in the U.S. and 12th in the world.

Gormley started competitive yo-yo about four years ago and has won three competitions since, including the Colorado tournament. “I like yo-yo just because it’s fun,” Gormley said. “I enjoy it and competitions let me challenge myself.”

Training for these competitions involves practicing tricks for about an hour a day. Before competitions, Gormley prepares all his tricks (which are all original) and plans out what he is going to do. The competitions are fairly easy to enter, but the actual events can be fierce.

Yo-yoing is a unique skill and Zach Gormley has clearly mastered it—with the U.S. title to prove it.
