The Playlist: Memories… Do Not Open

My name is Cami, a pop/indie music enthusiast and lover of good vibes. I spend a lot of my time listening to music, some of my favorite artists being The Chainsmokers, Bones, Die Antwoord, Glades, ON AN ON, and Jon Bellion. This is my first time contributing to this column.

On April 6, the Chainsmokers dropped their new album titled Memories… Do Not Open. Including “Bloodstream,” “Don’t Say,” “The One,” “Wake Up Alone,”  “Honest,” and “Last Day Alive,” and featuring artists Florida Georgia Line, Louane, Emily Warren, and Jhene Auko, Memories is the perfect album for the start of summer.

A diverse array of beats and catchy lyrics provide good vibes for any listener. My personal favorites are “The One,” a song I find relatable, catchy, and pleasant to listen to and “Don’t Say” ft. Emily Warren, a song with a great beat and vocals, but trust me when I say it was hard to choose favorites from such an awesome array of songs.

However, like most albums, there are a few ‘filler’ songs that seem generic and boring, such as “Honest,” a repetitive and bland song about, well, honesty. “Wake Up Alone” is a typical song about money and fame and is rather shallow with its forced involvement of romance and a sad, desperate beat drop.

Some unique songs of the album are “My Type” ft. Emily Warren and “Last Day Alive” ft Florida Georgia Line. “My Type” introduces piano at the intro and passionate vocals with a strange but likeable clap beat. “Last Day Alive” stands out for its free- feeling spirit and dominant male vocals backed up by a truly amazing beat.

Overall, this album is worth a listen for pop fans and a must- have for lovers of The Chainsmokers.

WARNING: I AM MEAN BUT PLEASE DON’T CENSOR ME MY OPINION MATTERS TOO

This album is offensive to teenagers. To paraphrase the OG Anthony Fantano, the Chainsmokers clearly think very little of their audience if this is the kind of music they produce for them. Melodramatic teenage drama coming from grown men is plain sad and the music is uninspired and basic. Another critique I liked of the Chainsmokers came from Kevin Lozano, who wrote that the Chainsmokers would be the perfect music for a sociopath to listen to, as it is completely lifeless but just popular enough to not seem unordinary. Please don’t write any more music reviews because honestly it is painfully obvious that you don’t know what you’re talking about considering that the best you can say about this album is that it contains “likeable beats” and “good vibes”. In truth, the entire album is pandering filler that I am shocked other teenagers can enjoy because it’s generic tween pop music.

    Over and out,

“The One” is one of my personal favourites. I prefer the concert version over the studio version though and if you haven’t heard it you should probably give it a listen. They use it to open their concert and just the way they do the music is so good.
