Isabella Mahal

Isabella Mahal: journalist, academic beat leader, activist for what she believes in. Whether it’s defending women’s rights, LGBT+ rights, or freedom of speech, Mahal isn’t afraid to fight for what she finds just. She has been involved in journalism since her freshman year, but she didn’t know until a couple months into the class that she wanted to stay with the program. Although Mahal is not planning on continuing in the journalism field as a career, she does plan on pursuing a career in public health to fulfill her passion for helping others.

Mahal spends some of her free time advocating for groups that she feels need help. She thinks that, “it’s one thing to be able to be the person to go a protest… but it’s another thing to capture it,” which leads her interest in editorials on sensitive subject matters. She is also involved with Spectrum Alliance, a club at Fossil Ridge High School,  where she holds a leadership position. The club provides a place where students can express themselves and talk about issues that the world, nation, or school are facing.

Even in the chaotic world of a high school student, Mahal has a passion for music; one of her favorite genres is alternative rock. Bands such as The Front Bottoms, SWMRS, and Counting Crows are a few of her favorites. Her guilty pleasure of musical artists is Taylor Swift.

“De-stress, happiness, involvement,” are the three words describing Mahal’s goals this school year. De-stress, because she feels that she always puts a pressure on herself, and that she simply needs to “chill out.” As for happiness, “it is something to always strive for in life.” Mahal also wants to be more involved in her school during her last two years. Mahal looks forward to another year at Fossil, “writing about things that matter and making sure that people are aware.”
