Foothills Mall showcases student art
November 14, 2017
Starting on Friday, November 17 and continuing through the New Year, artwork from Poudre School District students will be on display at the Foothills Mall. The show, called “Creative Encounters”, showcases elementary through high school students. “It shows the connection between the grades, and the building of art skills. It’s a really great growth chart for the public to see,” said Kim Cohen, the photography teacher at Fossil Ridge High School. Not only that, but holding this show at the mall allows for all sorts of people in the community to observe students’ work, not just their parents and friends.
Each school received uniform black boards to put their artwork on: elementary schools have three, middle schools four, and high schools five. Fossil art teachers took this opportunity to dedicate each board to a different art class. For Karen Lemmon, it was her AP Studio Art students, Becca Klyczek displayed general art and work from the Unified Art class, Chelsea Ermer focused on graphic and digital art, and Cohen took pictures from her Photo 1 class. Ever since the new mall opened, the district art liaison Laura Cronin has worked with the mall to ensure that the show display would be “consistent and clean looking,” explained Cohen.
Reily Love, a sophomore in Ermer’s Digital Drawing and Painting class, was extremely excited to find out that her work was in this show, and said that “it’s crazy but also really cool” to have it on display for the public to see. While student artwork is constantly displayed in cases outside the art rooms at Fossil, students rarely have opportunities such as this one for the public to see their talent. The Foothills Mall is a prime position for this art show because, not only will students’ parents visit the mall to see the work, but any passerby can stop to take a look without going out of their way. The next major art gallery similar to this one will not be until March of 2018, and will be located in the Hatton Gallery in the CSU Art Building. Any other PSD Art Events can be found here.
