Cross country making it big

Cross country has been running strong for the 2012 season, which began in June. All train hard but there are a select few that stand out. The top girl varsity runners are juniors Emily Weber, Merritt Miller, and sophomore Ashley Bock. The top three boys are seniors Austin Croft, Aaron Bonenberger, and Elliot Leonard.

Under head coach Forrest Vaughn, assistant coaches Annie Rentel and coach Bennett Colvin, they all work together to stride for their athletes to achieve personal records. During the Andy Meyers

Invitational held Oct. 5 the girls took ninth place while the boy’s junior varsity team got 10th in their last regular season race. A few weeks later the team ran state.

On Oct. 27 FRHS attended the state competition. It was held at Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs, and boys placed 14th overall. The top runners were:

Elliot Leonard said, “We’ve been training for the state meet since June 1, so we obviously knew we would do well at state.”

The team has been training every day for five months, running countless miles to get prepared mentally and physically. There are more than 60 people on the team and they all contribute in some way.

“Overall this was a great year and I met a lot of new people going to the team meetings and sitting on buses, the team meetings is a place where you just hangout with the team, I know I just go around and talk to as many people as I can.”

All the varsity athletes have ran together for all four years. They have all been close from the start. All the countless miles they run they just get closer and closer talking about everything. Sabercat cross country did a great job this year and looking forward to next years.
