Fossil rewrites history. They competed against Castle View in the first round of State in the 5A girls volleyball bracket. Earlier in the season the Sabercats went against Castle View in their second game of the season and lost every set.
This afternoon they swept Castle View 3-0. Ally Nowak started off the game with an ace, from there both Emery Johnson and Kamryn Margison continued to serve strong, leading Castle View to call their first timeout of the game.
In time for the State tournament, Fossil cleaned up their serves and made less errors, a trait they need if they should continue to fight for State title. The first set was a fast one, Fossil destroying the court and by a large margin won 25-11.
Castle View finally woke up and had a three point lead into the second set. Once Johnson stepped up as server she gained a seven point lead for her team with her strong serves. Castle View continued to fight back but the Sabercats maintained a small lead throughout the game.
With multiple rallies and Castle View pulling ahead it looked as if Fossil might lose this set. Natalie Burton, the head coach, called a timeout at 24-24 to freeze the other server and it worked when Fossil won the next two points, leading them into the third set.
No team allowed the other to go on a serving run, each server only getting to serve about two balls before it was overturned. Castle View called a timeout when Fossil was five points ahead at 9-4. Kaylee Piepho, a skilled setter and server was attempted to be frozen by Castle View during the middle of her serving spree, but Castle View was unsuccessful and Fossil pulled ahead for two more points after the timeout was called.
Trinity Burchett was running across the back of the court, digging several balls up, a trend the audience first saw during Regional Playoffs when she was diving left and right. Burchett served Fossil to their win of 25-18. The Sabercats will play again tonight at 6:30 pm against Chaparral, the second ranked team in the 5A bracket.
