In a clean game against Greeley Central at Fossil Ridge High School, the Stars came out with another win, their record now 5-3.
With serves from Dylan Smith and kills from Trevor Baldwin, the Sabercats were guaranteed a win.
“We’ve been working really hard in practice and it feels good to see it come out in this game,” Baldwin says.
Shane Gerdes brought the Stars to a lead in the first set with his four top-spin serves, too difficult for Greeley Central to return.
Despite the Wildcats calling a timeout during the middle of Alex Van-Thuyne’s serves, Fossil maintained the lead.
The Stars slowly started making more serve-receive mistakes, allowing the Wildcats to catch up, only three points behind.
The Wildcats called one more timeout at 23-18, but the game was already the Stars’.
Yet a kill from setter Ty Morris finished the first set, the Sabercats won 25-21.
“[The season] is coming together really well,” Morris said, the team’s ultimate goal to compete in the State Championship.
The Sabercats finished off Greeley Central faster, again a kill ending the set 25-18, this time from Connor Switala.
Within the third set, both teams fought valiantly yet the Stars kept the lead. Greeley Central had no choice but to call two timeouts throughout the game, one at 4-1 and the other at 17-13.
The second one successfully scared the Stars enough into calling their own timeout ten points later at 22-18, although they had the lead the Wildcats were putting up a fight.
Greeley Central was only able to gain two more points before losing the set, 25-20, and the game 3-0, Trevor Baldwin making the winning spike.
“After a long game, it just feels good to finally finish it out,” Baldwin says.
The Stars play again March 26 against Thorton High School in a home game.
