Screening Success: Tri-M hosts a movie night

On February 28, a lively crowd took over the Round House, where the Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) Honor Society was hosting the movie Ten Things I Hate About You to raise money for the Kayla Foundation.

This is their second one; they previously hosted one around Christmas, showing the classic Home Alone.

Tri-M is an honor society made up of around 60 students who participate in choir, band, and orchestra. The board of Tri-M decided to organize a movie night to help students from Tri-M or other honor societies get more hours.

“We needed a way that was gonna get people excited about coming to a Tri-M event,” explains Juliet Smith, a senior and the Tri-M Honor Society President.

Many students were excited not only about the movie but also the food.

“I just want popcorn. I just came for like the food, but I also need hours,” expresses junior Sierra Gouldey.

To raise money for the foundation, they opened a concession stand with popcorn, hot chocolate, water, candy, and other snacks. They were also accepting additional donations.

This proved successful as they raised $200 from normal concessions and $50-$60 from additional donations. However, that is not all they have for the foundation. They will be sending everything they make from their other fundraising events at the end of the school year.

The parents of Kayla started the Kayla Foundation in memory of her. The foundation’s goal is to help support Kayla’s love for music and the community, kids, and anyone else in need of help. It helps support students with financial needs wanting to be in Poudre School District Music Programs. Smith explains that they have supported this foundation for a number of years.

“It’s a cause that’s close to our hearts, as music people”, Smith says.

Ten Things I Hate About You was chosen by members of Tri-M.

“The board member proposed a bunch of movie ideas; we did this for the last one too, and then we picked the top two or three. And then we had a poll sent out to all Tri-M members, and they voted on which movie we watch,” Smith explains.

The Proposal was the runner-up right next to Ten Things I Hate About You, both supporting the spirit of Valentine’s month. Due to the popularity of the chosen movie, the Tri-M board was happy with the turnout.

Ten Things I Hate About You was definitely a highlight, people love the movie. I’m glad so many people have never seen it because it’s such a good movie, ” says Maddie Holloway, another member of the Tri-M board.

The crowd responded to scenes with excitement.

“I like it when she backs into the Hot Rod (Joey) guy’s car,” says Timothy Mathews, a senior.

Tri-M also will have an event on March 31, a Spring symphony showcasing solo and group performances at their cozy concert.
