The Asian Student Organization was brought back to Fossil this May after being discontinued previously. Sophomores Kathy Li, Angela Hao, and Sachit Srinivas now run the club and welcome all students interested in Asian cultures to come.
The club meets every other Friday in Mr. Henry’s room (W208) during lunch. Every meeting focuses on a different country’s culture and provides snacks from that country. The last meeting was focused on Thailand, talking about the culture and fun facts about the country. The snack was a variety of different flavored seaweed.
“We thought bringing it back would be a cool idea, especially since this month is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month,” Hao said.
The club emphasizes all students who are interested in Asian cultures to come and help create an inclusive environment.
“It’s not just for Asian people,” Hao said. “It’s for anyone that’s interested in learning about Asian cultures and the variations between different cultures.”
Hao and Li have experienced an Asian-centered community through their time at Chinese school at Colorado Early Colleges. They thought that bringing a similar community and energy to Fossil would be beneficial for many students now and in the future.
“We just wanted to bring a more Asian culture and heritage into Fossil,” said Li.
With the club starting up late in the year, plans to expand and emphasize different cultures more are going to be incorporated next year. These plans include more activities like calligraphy, games, learning about how the news affects Asians living in America in society, and learning about current events in Asian countries.
“I was really happy that there’s another club that I can enjoy,” said student Allison Lee. “The club’s a fun way to meet new people and learn about cultures, while also having snacks.”
Due to this Friday not having school, the next meeting will be on May 23, focusing on Japanese culture.
