While joining clubs may not be in everyone’s interest, joining Game Time Club while eating pizza, drinking soda, and talking about sports feels like a steal.
“It doesn’t necessarily require you to know anything about sports, but it’s a good way to be included in them and find out new things about sports, like I didn’t know various things about soccer that I’d know now because of it,” said Fossil Ridge High School senior Jackson Martin, Game Time Club president.
Every Friday, students gather in the roundhouse to eat, drink, and discuss sports under the leadership of Fossil business teacher Jamie Menefee. Game Time Club is available for a $20 annual fee, with drinks and pizza sold separately each week.
While sports expertise is not mandatory, it helps, Martin said.
“It doesn’t only talk about U.S. sports. There’s also international sports there, like in the Olympics that we talk about, but the main focus is on U.S. sports,” Martin said.
And the time is not spent on just talking, either.
“It’s about hanging out with friends and betting on sports,” freshman Andrew Stoffel said, referring to the unofficial “pickems” system Game Time participants use.
Sophomore Canon Rhey calls the Friday lunch a highlight of his week.
“There are so many people I know there, and there are a lot of sports fans. There’s a lot of talk about sports. Also, the pizza is delicious,” said Rhey.
