Fossil esports Fortnite team wins championship

Mario Kart and Valorant teams finish top three

Fossil Ridge High School esports took home their second ever Colorado championship win on Tuesday, as Fortnite dominated in the finals, winning 2-0 against Vista Peak Preparatory.

Seniors Gabe Alfrey and William Agnew saw uncontested success in their games this season, winning every match with a score of 2-0.

Coach Brian Besel said it would be difficult to say which senior was the better player.

“You have to ask Gabe and William who’s better. When the two of them 1v1 each other, it’s really close,” he said.

In Tuesday’s finals, the two seniors started the first set slowly, with a score of 3-3 after six rounds, before entering their groove and winning 10-5. The second set went even better, starting 8-1 and ending 10-3. Through the 28 rounds, Agnew accumulated 23 eliminations, while Alfrey racked up 17.

Following Fortnite’s win, the Fossil Valorant team is set to play their championship match in the Mountain Region against the 1st seed Spanish Fork High School on Wednesday, Dec.10. Despite being seeded 7th, the team saw a great playoff run, taking down the 2nd seed Chaparral, 10th seed Thunder Ridge, and 14th seed Vista Valor in the semi-finals.

However, Poudre School District has banned both Fortnite and Valorant from being played in the district for all future seasons, making these the first and final Fortnite and Valorant seasons for Fossil Esports.

The Mario Kart team, seeded 5th, was unfortunately knocked out in the semi-finals on Dec. 5 to the 1st seed Thunder Ridge. Seniors Zach Brors, Gilly Ley, Luke Organ, and freshman Timbre Fries put up a great fight and finished 3rd place in the state.

“We did well even though we didn’t practice much,” Ley said. “We need to practice next season.”
