Rising RAM Prices Affect Fossil Ridge Students

Upgrading a computer is becoming very difficult for Fossil Ridge students because of rising RAM (Random Access Memory) prices. You can think of RAM as the memory of the computer like what we have in our brains, and big AI tech companies need a lot of memory to spit out information quickly to users. What was once an affordable and simple purchase has turned into a pricey challenge, especially for students who use PC computers for school, gaming, or creative work.

As a Fossil Ridge student, I have personally experienced this issue when trying to upgrade my own computer. To learn more about how others are affected, I interviewed an anonymous Fossil Ridge student, and Fossil Ridge graduate, Ronny Galvez. Both shared similar struggles with the increasing cost of RAM.

The anonymous student explained that upgrading their PC was way more expensive than they thought. They said that what should have been an easy Amazon purchase turned into something they had to wait for and save up for due to the higher prices. Galvez shared that even after graduating, upgrading a computer is now more than ever because RAM prices have continued to rise.

Both people pointed to the fast growth of artificial intelligence as a major reason behind the increase. AI companies require large amounts of RAM to make and operate advanced systems like ChatGPT. As these companies grow, they purchase memory in bulk, reducing availability and driving up prices for everyday consumers.

Over the past few years, AI technology has quickly expanded. Tools like chatbots, image generators, and analysis programs require a lot of computing power, so they pay more for RAM than consumers do.

Galvez explained that when he first began building computers, RAM was one of the easiest and cheapest parts to buy. Now, he says prices are too high and difficult to predict, making it harder to plan upgrades. He also noted that discounts and deals are less common than in the past.

The anonymous student added that many Fossil Ridge students may not understand why prices are increasing. Without knowing the connection to AI, it can feel like technology is simply becoming less affordable, and they are broke. This lack of awareness adds to the frustration students feel when trying to improve their computers.

Rising RAM prices affect more than just gaming. Big companies are aware of the issue, but there is no solution. As artificial intelligence continues to grow, demand for RAM is expected to remain and only get more expensive. This means prices may continue to rise in the near future.

For Fossil Ridge students, the rise in RAM prices shows how global technology trends can directly affect everyday life and hobbies. As AI continues to expand, students are already feeling its impact through the increasing cost of computer upgrades, making them broke.
