Becoming a senior in the US is generally an accomplishment that usually comes with perks. Seniors are claiming that customising their parking spaces using vibrant colors, images, and personal mottos is something fun missing in our school.
Fossil seniors around campus have been left puzzled as to why Fossil doesn’t allow its seniors to paint their parking spots. “It’s really sad,” senior Drake Walker said when asked his views on the situation. “You know, a lot of my friends at other schools they got parking spots, and they feel special,” Walker said.
This isn’t anything new at Fossil. Almost every year, the same discussion keeps coming up: Will Fossil allow its seniors to paint their parking spaces?
“It’s really something to be proud of,” Timnath High School senior Cade Geist told us. So far, PSD schools such as Timnath, Fort Collins, and Rocky Mountain all let their senior students paint their parking spaces.
Painting the parking spots is a whole event, all the seniors come together to showcase their artistic abilities as well as hang out and socialize. “It would be fun to walk around and see everyone’s parking spot,” senior Max Mannlein said. “It’s unique, it shows character.”
The senior students have always been interested in painting their parking spots, but ultimately, Fossil Administration is the one who gets to make decisions. When asked about any potential change in the future, Bradley Nye, one of the administrators at Fossil, expressed interest and shared the administrator’s views on the decision.
Principal Mark Barry said that “it’s a matter of inclusivity of other students at the school, and they would be left out of participation from the seniors.”
In other words, he said, “I am a senior, I have earned it, deserved it,” and “we don’t want to create a division.”
Though other schools in the district do it, “fair isn’t always equal, equal is equal,” Barry said.
It is also not fully up to Barry to make this decision; the students’ leadership paths around the school and administrators like Nye have the input and ability to make decisions like this around the school.
Fossil color and themed spots might be available in the future, though, because Barry said, “Let’s make this a school thing, let’s celebrate Fossil Ridge, that is something I will think about, okay.”
“How do we celebrate all Sabercats without it being a competition,” and “We are all Fossils, and let’s show it,” Barry said.
As for now, Fossil Ridge doesn’t allow personalized senior parking spots, but there might be a change in the future and give hope to students who want to participate in an activity like this.
