National English Honors Society’s (NEHS) annual Poetry and Pastry night was a smash hit.
Poetry and Pastries night is an annual event hosted by NEHS where students alike can gather to watch a film, participate in poetry-creating activities, and eat tasty pastries. This year had a heightened attendance.
Senior Lucia Lu, President of NEHS “We did blackout poetry, haikus, free writing, and concrete poetry. After that, we watched Dead Poets Society.”
Britony Mirowski, administrator of NEHS, had this to reflect on how the event went: “I’m so proud of how the leadership set up the event and ran it, and then I’m so proud of the kids that attended, because they wrote amazing poetry and got to watch an inspiring movie. It was such a fun time!”
Sophomore Wesley Holmes, who presented his blackout poem, said, “My poem was about loneliness and how some people consider it to be like a big burden, but it was about how sometimes it’s a little freeing to be able to not rely on anybody.”
Mirowski also had to share her enthusiasm, “I was so impressed, because that’s hard to do when you’re in front of everyone, and he read his poem so well.”
Holmes felt that “It was a good atmosphere to be able to brainstorm…It was a chill time to sit back, watch a movie, eat some pastries and make some poetry.”
