Here at Fossil, students who are interested in healthcare can join HOSA(Health Occupations Students of America): Future Healthcare Professionals. Unlike any traditional health science classes, HOSA allows students to participate in a wide range of events that help them practice and apply skills they’ve learned in class.
“HOSA gives students a chance to compete and practice skills that they are learning in classes,” says Sarah Hower, the chapter advisor for HOSA here at Fossil. “There are a ton of different events that students can compete in, so they are able to learn content and skills that we don’t have classes for.”
On February 14, last weekend, Fossil brought 85 students to the HOSA State Leadership Conference, where they competed in healthcare, leadership, and teamwork events. Students prepared by completing at least 10 hours of studying, attending help sessions, and participating in a practice competition with feedback from judges and professionals.
The chapter has nearly doubled in size each year, showing a growing interest in healthcare careers from students. Students can serve as officers, join committees, and talk with guest speakers from various medical fields to explore potential careers.
“I think this event shows students that they are capable of doing hard things,” says Hower. “It gives them an idea of whether they like the career or not sooner.”
Through leadership and competition, Fossil’s HOSA chapter is helping students build the necessary skills to launch their future healthcare careers.
