Since 2022, Ella Lavigne held the single-game rebounding record for Fossil Ridge High School.
This year’s senior night, Lauren Smith, the only senior on the team, made school history by shattering the record by six rebounds, grabbing a total of 24.
The milestone happened on February 17, 2026, when Fossil Ridge faced the Poudre Impalas. Although the SaberCats fell short with a final score of 47–39, Smith’s performance on the glass stood out.
Even before the game started, Smith had a feeling it was going to be a big night for her on the boards.
“Right before the game started, I had a feeling I was going to grab a lot of rebounds because Poudre’s team didn’t have much size.”
While the loss was disappointing, Smith focused on doing whatever she could to give her team an edge throughout the game.
“Obviously, I wanted to win, but I got to help out in whatever way I could for my team,” she said. “Rebounding is about heart and effort, and I just wanted to bring that for my team.”
When she finally realized she had broken the school record, the moment didn’t immediately feel real.
“I didn’t believe it at first, but after I realized it, I was full of excitement.”
As the only senior on Fossil’s team, Smith understands that her role goes beyond statistics. She embraces the responsibility of setting the tone for her younger teammates.
“Being the only senior is sad, but it also means I need to lead by example. I try to bring as much energy as I can because I feel as if the younger generation needs it sometimes.”
Though the win didn’t fall in Fossil Ridge’s favor that night, Smith’s record-breaking performance at senior night will be remembered in school history.
