Fossil Ridge setter hits 1,000 career assists

Jason Mynatt is a three-year varsity setter for Fossil Ridge volleyball. Mynatt just surpassed 1,000 career assists in his high school career.

Mynatt started playing volleyball in his freshman year and became a varsity player in just his sophomore year.

Being a setter, Mynatt has to be on the same page as all of his teammates so he can think like them to plan and set up his teammates.

1,000 assists is a triumph by itself, and to do it in 3 years is all the more impressive.

“I get an assist every time I pass it to my teammate, and they immediately get the kill. If they don’t get a kill, it’s just an attempted assist,” Mynatt said.

Star players usually have a signature number, but Mynatt said his #11, “just picked it out of the blue freshman year, then it stuck.”

To get an assist, you need a teammate, Mynatt said. “I was extremely lucky to be with some good teammates throughout the years and succeed as much as we did,” Mynatt said.

Senior Ben Lindquist started playing volleyball in his junior year, and had some comments about Mynatt, “He is a tremendous player, and always gives good sets,” he said. “When he hit 1,000 assists, I really took a second to think about what that meant, and it was a pretty cool moment.”

Mynatt hasn’t just learned and dominated his sport; he took away some valuable, real-life lessons like “Perseverance for sure, like when you’re down and battling for a little while, you have to dig deep and take everything you do into initiative to ultimately achieve your goal.”

Good chemistry with teammates could take years, but for Mynatt, the outlook of the team going into each season looked incredibly different.

In the 2024 season, Mynatt’s team was known as the PSD Stars and had teams compiled of kids from all over the district. They were dominant, going undefeated in league play.

The following season, in 2025, the PSD Stars transitioned into the Fossil Ridge Sabercats and the Poudre Impalas; the once dominant Stars broke into two equal but less talented teams. Despite a strict cut in the roster from last season, Mynatt and the Sabercats went on and had a record of 8-1 in conference play. Fossil Ridge ended up placing 2nd in conference standings, right behind the Poudre Impalas, who went 9-0 in conference play.

The 2026 season marks the end of Mynatt’s high school career, and he surely has something to show for it. The last regular season game of the season is on April 28, away against Arvada West to wrap up the regular season.
