Fossil Girls Soccer shuts down Cherry Creek

The Fossil Ridge girls soccer team beat Cherry Creek 3-0 on May 11, bringing their record to 16-1 on the campaign. The Sabercats will travel to Denver University to clash Castle View on May 14.

From the opening whistle, Fossil matched Cherry Creek’s intensity and never backed down. The Sabercats moved the ball well offensively while the defense was able to almost keep the ball on their half the entire time, and the goalkeeper came up with key stops throughout the game to keep the Bruins under pressure.

The biggest moment of the night came from Jordan Killion, who scored an incredible long-range goal that controlled the momentum completely in Fossil’s favor. With space in front of her, Killion fired a shot from deep that floated right over the defender and into the back of the net, sending the crowd into celebration.

“I honestly didn’t even think that much about it,” Killion said. “I saw the defender step up and just tried to hit it over her. Once it went in, everyone went crazy.”

Killion said the team stayed really confident throughout the match despite facing one of the top programs in the state.

“We knew we could compete with them,” Killion said. “Everybody worked hard the entire game, and we trusted each other to finish what had to be done.”

The Sabercats continued to fight until the final whistle, holding off Cherry Creek with strong defense and sustained energy on the field.

Fossil’s goalkeeper, Olivia Rice, also played a major role in the shutout victory, coming up with several important saves to stop Cherry Creek from building momentum.

“My favorite save was probably my one-on-one save,” Rice said. “She got through the defense, and I just tried to stay patient and make myself big. Once I stopped it, I felt like it gave our team even more fire to win the game.”

With the playoff victory, Fossil keeps its season alive and continues an impressive postseason run, proving the Sabercats are capable of competing with anyone in Colorado.
