Tom Daley comes out

19-year-old British diver and Olympic sensation, Tom Daley, uploaded a monumental coming out video Dec. 10.

“In spring this year, my life changed massively when I met someone and they made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great,” The Plymouth, England native said. “And that someone is a guy.”

The profoundness of his approach to the matter is fantastic. Never EVER during his video does he label himself as anything other than a normal person, whether that’s gay, bisexual, or straight. Daley doesn’t deserve to be labeled because he is normal. He just likes guys, that’s all, nothing that deserves so much media attention. All he says is that he’s dating a guy, and that he is happy. He also says he still finds interest in girls, so socially, Daley is bisexual. But just for Tom, he is only being himself and expressing who he is. If he’s happy, what really is the reason pop culture is blowing up about the “news”?

A question the video prompts is, why do we have the need for people to “come out?” Why can’t people just be who they are and not have to feel the need reveal it to anyone? ”In a perfect world I wouldn’t be doing this video because it shouldn’t matter,” Daley said in his video

A few days later, Daley’s boyfriend was revealed. 39-year-old Dustin Lance Black is his name and Oscar winning is his game. The Oscar winning screenwriter is native to California, and has 20 years his boyfriend’s senior. (That part of the story is slightly cringe worthy though, I mean he’s actually old enough to be his dad….) But pushing the age matter aside, he’s a successful writer whose original screenplay for the film “Milk” won him an Academy Award in 2008. He’s also going to be heading across the pond to Daley’s roots while filming the adaptation of “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight,” a novel by Jennifer E. Smith. (One of my favorites..)

Personally I’d like to congratulate Tom on his bravery. Revealing something that society and culture makes such a big deal about takes some serious guts. (He does have abs of steel though, so maybe that helped…)
