OPINION: America’s sweetheart not so sweet?

OPINION: America’s sweetheart not so sweet?

Forbes created a list of the world’s most powerful celebrities based on salary, T.V./radio, press, marketability, and social rank. Pulling the sixth title is America’s sweetheart, Taylor Swift, 24. While most people may agree that she is a positive role model for her fans around the world, is the innocent sweet singer of hit singles like “22” and “We are Never Getting Back Together” really a positive influence?

Made popular by her backlashing break up songs, Taylor Swift appeals to every teenager who has ever been in a relationship. While some may consider her lyrics to be empowering, her lyrics are sending the wrong message.

For example, on the album version of “Pictures to Burn”, written by Swift and released in 2008 includes the lyrics “So go and tell your friends that I’m Obsessive and crazy. That’s fine, I’ll tell mine that you’re gay.” This is not only a very homophobic comment as she is insinuating that calling him gay would be humiliating, but it is also an untruthful statement which promotes spreading rumors and flat out lies.

Swift has also been known to publically humiliate her ex’s like in her 2013 Grammy performance of “We are Never Getting Back Together” where she emulates a British accent, dissing recent ex and member of British boy band One Direction,  Harry Styles who was in the audience.

Swift made another bash at Styles during her 2013 VMA’s acceptance speech saying “I also want to thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I’ve got one of these [gestures towards award].” The camera then cut to the One Direction boys to catch their reaction.

While some of her exes brush off the back lash, others feel hurt and disrespected from the pop star. After the release of Swift’s song “Dear John”, John Mayer, told Rolling Stone in 2012 that he was humiliated adding, “I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?”

From her very first album, Swift has been bashing boys and since then, hasn’t written many songs that don’t have to do with one of her many relationships. Since she has only written these types of songs, Swift has shown that she has talent for only one genre which deducts from her talent. It also shows that she values relationships over anything else which isn’t a good message to send and constantly being in a relationship creates the illusion that she is incapable of being independent.

Writing a song that airs out all your dirty laundry to the world, publically showing disrespect and humiliating peers, public figures, and role models is not an effective or healthy outlet after a breakup. Unfortunately, this is the message Taylor Swift is sending her highly influential and young fans.
