OPINION: Shopping for clothes more stressful than math tests

As a teenage girl, trying to find clothes is almost impossible. It’s not the problem that there aren’t enough clothes between the thousands of clothing stores; it’s finding the right clothes that is the problem. There are three major problems an article of clothing could have that makes it impossible to find anything at the store.

1.     The clothes don’t fit your body type.

Most of the time when I go clothes shopping, I will find some really cute clothes. But when I get to the dressing room, it just doesn’t look good on me. It’s too tight in the wrong places or too long or it doesn’t sit right. Clothes anymore are made for only one body type: tall, toothpick skinny, and few curves. While this may be what designers desire right now, not every teenage girl in America has this body. Thanks to genetics, we all look different and that’s a good thing! I love my body, but being 5’2”, curvy, and not exactly toothpick skinny, close to nothing looks very good on me other than a plain t-shirt. While t-shirts are great, I like to wear more than just that. I want to look nice! I’ve finally given up on finding a pair of jeans that aren’t too long and instead I’ve learned to hem them. Clothes are “one body type fits all” and most girls are not that type.

2.   Your size is not available.

We have all had that moment where you find the perfect shirt or skirt on the rack, but when you go to grab your size it’s not there; instead you find one or two extra extra smalls and plenty of larges, extra larges, and extra extra larges. The only clothes left in your size are the ones you don’t want. Plus, the size you are is different in every brand. I have a pair of jeans that are size 3 and another that are size 9, yet they both fit me. How do you know which size to begin with?

3.   The clothes are too expensive.

After all of your searching, you finally find that perfect shirt and your size is available! Even better, you look great in it. But then, you look at the price tag to find it’s not within your budget and you grudgingly put it back on the rack.

After hours of searching through the jungle that is a department store, looking through every rack in the junior’s section and then the women’s section because gosh darn it, something should work, you leave discouraged and empty-handed. It’s no wonder that girls are so self-conscious about their bodies today; we can’t find any clothes that fit like it does on the model! Maybe one day, I can go to the store and not stress out more than I do on an AP Calculus test. But until then, I will search just like the rest of American girls that don’t fit the model body type for that one piece of clothing that looks great.
