Opening ceremony big hit, plus a miss

The opening ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia started off by recognizing Russian accomplishments for each letter of the alphabet. The ceremony continued by going through major parts of Russia’s history in an interpretive performance including a live ballet. The one glitch of the night occurred when five snowflakes were supposed to morph into the Olympic rings. However, the fifth ring never formed and stayed a snowflake.

Bobsledder breaks through the bathroom door

U.S. bobsledder Johnny Quinn was stuck locked into the bathroom. He knocked on the door to find that he had started to break through it. He continued to hit the door until he had a big enough hole to escape through. Quinn tweeted the picture of the door, gaining over 30,000 retweets.

U.S. snowboarder wins first gold of games with new trick

U.S. snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg took home the first gold of the Winter Olympics on the snowboard slopestyle course. Kotsenburg impressed the judges with a new trick he calls the “Holy Crail,” a trick where he rotates 4 ½ times and grabs the board in the back. Kotsenburg had never tried the trick before competing.
