Dress Code enforcement

Dress Code enforcement

What are the reasons Fossil is enforcing the dress code so harshly? Fossil Ridge High School students have recently been hit hard by dress code enforcement this year and it is important to understand the reasoning behind the new enforcement practices.

The first thing that needs to be understood is that nothing about the dress code is new. The dress code has existed at Fossil for a long time but the difference this year is that it is being enforced. Many Fossil students are asking why now? Dean of Students, Mark Barry, shed light on the subject, saying that the dress code has been enforced this year based on many parent complaints and even student complaints. In an email sent to student’s parents the details of violations and consequences were listed:

“Student Dress and Appearance.  We hope to teach students the value of dressing appropriately for time and location, which is a valuable post-secondary skill.  Highlights of the district-approved guidelines for student attire include:

*Clothing must be worn so it covers underwear, as well as the back, midriff, chest, and buttocks.  All tops must have straps and must cover chest, back, and stomach.

*Clothing that promotes alcohol, drugs, tobacco, gang affiliation, sexuality, or profanity is prohibited.

*Skirts and shorts must be of appropriate length (no buttock crease visible).

*Half shirts, undershirts, see through or mesh shirts, tube tops, or any tops without a back will not be allowed.

*Sunglasses, dark glasses, masks, or any attire which covers the face are prohibited.”

The email states that students who violate this code will be asked to change their dress to be appropriate and if not they will subject to disciplinary action. These actions include, but are not limited to: suspension, detention and/or community service.
