Fossil Ridge High School went into their second football matchup of the 2014 season looking for a second straight win. Unfortunately, Fort Collins High School held off the surge of the Sabercats in September,15th showdown.
The Lambkins came out very strong in the first half, punching two touchdowns in early.
Collins senior running back Mason Schroyer had a 10 yard scoring run in the first quarter. Then Kyler Sigsbee had a 45 yard run to go up 14-0 early in the second. After that the Lambkins were going into the locker room at halftime with loads of confidence.
The second half seemed to be a slightly different story for Fossil. Sigsbee surged one more into the end zone to go up 20-0 after a missed extra point midway through the third. All arrows pointed to the game being over, but then there seemed to be a fire lit under the Fossil football team.
Late in the third quarter, after a long Sabercat drive, sophomore kicker Evan Bergeson drilled a 38 yard field goal with 6:13 left in the third quarter. And then just like that with 0:29 seconds left in the third, senior Mitch Salmela connected with senior receiver Josh Visee for a 66 yard touchdown. At the end of the third it was a 20-10 football game in favor of Collins.
But the Lambkins held off the late game push of the Sabercats to win 23-10 and improve their record to 2-0. Fossil fell to a 1-1 record on the year.
