Fossil Football runs through Boulder

After a long wait, Fossil Ridge High School’s football season has returned. The program lost its first nine season openers from the 2014-1015 season, yet this year’s first game against Boulder High School unfolded a lot differently than expected.

It didn’t take long for FRHS to get on the scoreboard; Ridge’s first drive resulted in a 73 yard touchdown pass from Griffin Roberts, junior quarterback, to senior receiver, Alec Mullen.  Roberts threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and Mullen finished the game with 88 receiving yards. The Team ended the night off with a 33-7 win over the Boulder Panthers.

Boulder played solid defense the first quarter, but Fossil answered. After a blocked kick by senior Ben Visee, junior Kordell Atencio ran it in from 3 yards out. “We came out strong with an early stop and a touchdown, and kept rolling from there.” Ben Visee commented after the game.

Into the second quarter, Atentio scored again, finishing with 69 rushing yards. “I couldn’t have gotten into the end zone without the offensive line. I owe it to them,” said Atencio, “I think last night set the tone for our energy and showed how hard we have worked all summer. There is a whole season for improvement.”

Dylan Johnston had a safety in the third, and Atencio got into the endzone for a third time at the end of the third quarter, making the score 33-0. Fossil slowed down in the fourth quarter, and Boulder responded with a touchdown in the last fifteen seconds of the fourth quarter.

FRHS now has a 1-0 record going into a big inner-city rivalry game next Friday against Fort Collins High School. C team football will play this Friday at Fossil Ridge and JV plays Saturday.
