As one of the largest fundraisers and learning experiences of the year, the Prom Fashion Show will be on Thursday, March 24, in the PAC at Fossil Ridge High School. Organized by DECA, the show not only gives students the opportunity to get ideas for hairstyles, nail designs, and outfits, it serves as a major fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. One of the best ways for students to show support is by going to the show and bringing a friend.
By putting on this show, students at Fossil gain real-world experience in the business word. Laura Martella, one of the directors for the show, said, “Our marketing leadership class learns valuable lessons about what it’s like networking and working with local business.” Martella, along with Lauren Bontempo, Jordan Carlyle, and Rebekah Engel, all coordinate the show with minimal assistance from their teacher Tanya Alcarez. The girls receive the dresses, tuxes, hair and makeup materials, coupons, cash donations, and gift baskets from local businesses around Fort Collins to help sponsor the show. “We went from local dress shop to local dress shop getting dress donations for the models,” said Martella.
This year, the fundraiser is for Nick, a child who suffers from sickle cell anemia, a condition in which healthy red blood cells in the body die, leading to blocked blood flow. Nick’s wish is to go to Virginia, and to help get him there, the girls hope to raise $7500. This next show will be the tenth annual, and the donation goal is double what it was in previous years.
Applications to participate in the show are no longer accepted, though any students who are not currently a senior have the opportunity to try again next year. In order to be all-inclusive, the show will feature around fifty girls and forty boys from all four high schools in Fort Collins. A very special guest will attend the show as well, though students will need to go to the show to find out who it is.
To make a donation, students and parents can give money or purchase a Ridge Nation t-shirt the night of the show, at the Fossil vs. Collins basketball game on Friday, February 12, or through this link: http://tinyurl.com/PSDwishevents2016.
