The track team has made a tradition of attending the Simplot games hosted at Idaho State University every year. Coach Williams, the head track coach takes his top varsity athletes to compete for each event. This event usually kick starts the track season and allows time for the athletes to become comfortable with one another before their first official meet. The team leaves on a Wednesday night and begins competing the following day starting with the preliminary races, the 1600 and 3200 distance run and throws.
This event, sponsored by Simplot. One of the largest privately held food and agribusiness companies in the United States always has big surprises in store. A talk from an Olympian. This year Steve Hooker and Olympic pole vaulter from the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Hooker spoke about his path to the Olympics and “Raising the Bar” how he became the third highest pole vaulter in history.
The athletes continue preliminary competitions until Friday when they also have time to play games and a dance party. On Saturday the schools finish the weekend off with the final competition, a Parade of Athletes and medal presentations to award those who placed highest in their event.
Last year, Fossil Ridge’s athletes made a big impact at these games. Chloe Woest placed highest ranking eleventh with a jump of 10-0 in girl’s pole vault.
This year Fossil held title spots in the girls pole vault with Chloe Woest placing second jumping at 11-6, Promise Butler placing twenty-fifth in the girls 800 meter run, Sydney Teslow placing thirty-fifth in the 1600 meter run, and Avery lux placed twelfth in the boys weight throw.
The team’s preseason track camp starts Monday February 22nd at 3 and goes throughout the week until the first Official day of practice February 29th.
