The Playlist: Places Back Home
The Playlist is a music review for all kinds of bands. I am the kind of person who likes to express themselves through music, despite the fact that I don’t play an instrument. The music I like is all over the place, pretty much everything besides all country. Some of my favorite bands include: Weezer, Offspring, Social Distortion, Stone Temple Pilots, Flogging Molly, and much more.
This is an opportunity for myself to express what I think about current albums and the next up and coming bands. I hope to interact with other music nerd and get the opportunity to discover more music through readers of this column. So please feel free to express opinions right back at me about the article. I hope that I gain much more experience about the idea of being a music critic.
Places Back Home is a band in Fort Collins, Colorado, who has recently released a new EP titled ‘Anchored’ on Friday, September 9. The EP features four songs that help characterize the band’s youth and ability to revisit memories good or bad.
The band has a mellow sound combined with rock, it reminds me of Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats with songs that serve more as anthems to empower the audience. PBH songs empower youth and young love which I think is an anthem most high school students and young adults want to hear.
Much of the music has a folk-like vibe, and it creates a different sound that is not your parent’s Cat Stevens album. I think that the sound of the band in general provides a calm and relaxing rhythm to the listeners. The music is different, the sound is whole hearted with care put into every acustic and lyric to insert a stronger meaning. Personally, I believe that it adds more heart to the band giving the music a stronger connection to the audience.
The song ‘Letters’ is a song that places the listener back in a time where they want to be with their significant other after a breakup. Chris Tofano sings about sending his last love letter and his memories of the person he loved. The letters as a whole represent memories and bonds that can unite two people, even if it is after a breakup. The overall song is soothing with a rhythm that makes you want to dance. It also brings the listener to a place or situation that they were once in love then it is all suddenly over. I found it all too relatable for anyone who has dealt with a breakup.
The band has been know to have an outstanding live performance that connects PBH to the audience well. I recommend seeing them live because it is better than listening to the band on a CD. Often performing at local Fort Collins breweries, they are known to keep high energy the whole night the moment they step on stage to the moment they step off stage. I found their concerts to be something that everyone just has to experience for themselves.
Places Back Home is certainly a Fort Collins band to keep an eye on. They have a smooth and original sound that brings the audience back home. If I were to choose the next big band from out of a small town, Places Back Home will not disappoint their fans in Fort Collins, Colorado.
