The stands were packed with both students and parents on Friday, January 13 for the rival game between Fossil Ridge High School and Poudre High School. There was back to back games with the girls varsity basketball teams playing first and the boys varsity basketball teams playing right after. It was an intense night as everyone watched in anticipation to see who would win the first rival game of the season for the Sabercats.
The first quarter consisted of the ball being ran up and down the court. Reaghan Lang scored the first basketball for the Sabercats after grabbing a rebound and putting it back up for a layup. The girls went 100% on free throws in the first half with Ashley Steffeck draining her two free throws, Brit Mishak finishing her two free throws and Kaylee Menefee hit nothing but net on her free throws. The quarter ended with Katey Guzman sinking a three pointer and Fossil leading Poudre 14-9.
The Sabercats controlled most of the second quarter, only allowing the Impalas to score 3 points. Fossil had possession in their offensive half which gained them 10 points in the quarter. Going into halftime the Sabercats sat in the lead 24-12.

Following halftime the Impalas were determined to tighten the lead and by the end of the third quarter they made it a 9 point game. Fossil scored their 9 points in the third quarter by capitalizing on Poudre’s turnovers. The third quarter came to an end with a score of 33-24, the Sabercats still in the lead.
The final quarter of the game did not consist of much action, with only 6 points being scored between the two teams. Fossil had one basket while Poudre had two three pointers. The Sabercats ended up defeating the Impalas 41-30.
Another double header will be held at Fossil’s court on Tuesday, January 17 as the Sabercats will compete against their second rival team Rocky Mountain High School. The girls play at 5:30 pm and the boys play at 7:00 pm. Be there and be loud.
