Fossil Ridge High School held its fourth annual color dance in the front courtyard as the first event of the school year. Students of all grade levels came to the dance hoping to have a fun and “colorful” night, and all of them left decorated with pink, blue, orange, green, yellow, and purple chalks. This year’s dance featured student DJs, karaoke, line dancing and a Kona Ice truck.
Although the dance started at 6:00 P.M. students were lined up well before then eager to get in. Within minutes of entering the color dance friends watched each other suspiciously wondering who would make the first move. It didn’t take long for students to start flinging color at each other.
It seems that for students both new and familiar with the color dance, their favorite part about the dance is getting to throw color at their friends. Emma Boice, freshman, said, “This is an awesome way to start the year.” Those who had previously been to a color dance at Fossil expect it to be lots of fun and engaging. Aubrey Leonard, a senior, described the dance as, “A great way for everyone to come together to start the year in a fun way.”
As the sunlight dimmed the air thickened with powdered chalk and the sound of giggles. Mr. Nye, the assistant principal, saw the dance as an “opportunity for students to come out after their first week of getting back into their groove of classes and unwind.” He also appreciates how as a non-traditional high school dance it is more welcoming to incoming underclassmen. For Autumn Gooseff, a sophomore, the color dance is her favorite of the school dances.
The final song played at the dance was “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, a rather fitting way to end the first Friday of a new school year.
