The Fossil Ridge High School’s second annual Sweetheart Showcase took place on Thursday, February 13, 2020, in the Performing Arts Center. This show has become very popular and many students love to attend each year. All of the proceeds from tickets and food donations go to Fossil’s large choir program in order to benefit the students involved. At the showcase, choir students were encouraged to sing a song involving love to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The show was hosted by three members of the theatre department at Fossil, Cade Frevert, Blake Rouse, and Ben Ashby. They made the show very entertaining with their hilarious skits between acts as well as the playful jokes all through the show which had the crowd laughing each time.

The show began strong with a powerful performance by Maggie Bishop singing “Gimme Gimme” by Thoroughly Modern Millie, an original Broadway production’s song.

Next, Nicco Ottolenghi and Jessica Morgan sang an incredible duet while performing “Stay” by Rhianna. The two were originally set to sing “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by Elton John, but their piece was overall exceptional.

Lucas Bean then took the stage singing “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, while Alex Tishkowski played the background music on the piano.

Roman Ragazzo sang “Falling Like the Stars” by James Arthur while simultaneously playing magnificently on his acoustic guitar.

Next, Zoe Dennis and Alex Tishkowski performed an original song written by Tishkowski called “Knee Caps.” Dennis’s mature voice gave the piece an extra wow-factor that brought the audience into the song.

Steven Nguyen gave an outstanding performance to the song “Wish you Were Gay” by Billie Eilish. His voice matched the song wonderfully and most of the audience was singing along with him.

The last performance before the intermission was a duet by Winter Ashurst and Ella Clear. They sang “When We Were Young” by Adele. Their two voices were beautiful together and it was apparent that they had choreographed certain moves into the show to make it more uniform and give the piece more emotion.

Intermission allowed the audience to help themselves to the large amount of sweets in the back of the PAC and most of the choir students came down to talk with their family and friends. Throughout the week of Valentine’s Day, students were able to purchase “Valentine’s Grams,” which were performed by Tenth Bass, an acapella choir group at Fossil. A few members of the choir would come during classes and sing to the person the gram was sent to. During the showcase intermission, random audience members were brought onto the stage and were serenaded with either the song “Put Your Head on my Shoulder,” “You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful,” and “Electric Love.”

They resumed the showcase with Cami Nugent singing “Love” by Nat King Cole. This piece had a lot of fun attitude in it and it was clear that Nugent was having a blast on the stage, which got a lot of the audience to dance along with her.

Next, Ryan Cleverly and Sophia Marshall performed “Only Us” from Dear Evan Hansen, a musical written by Steven Levenson. Both students had a specific part of the song but they came together in the end with beautiful harmony.

Erik Sokolowski sang “Little Things” by One Direction. He was moving around the stage until he later sat down, which allowed the audience to connect more with him as a performer.

The last solo of the night was done by Aiden Lee singing “Best Friend” by Rex Orange County. The popular song had almost everyone singing and dancing along with him.

Last to go on was Cade Frevert and Chloe Iverson singing “Lucky” by Jason Maraz and Colbie Caillat. The two had a small mishap when Iverson’s microphone was unable to turn on, so the two shared a microphone until she was able to find one that worked correctly. Their piece was very pretty and their voices sounded amazing together.

The next opportunity to go and watch Fossil’s choir is Monday, March 2, 2020, at 6:30 p.m.in the PAC.
