Girls varsity volleyball wins Front Range League: Moving onto regionals
The team debriefing before their next plays.
This upcoming Friday, April 30, the Fossil Ridge High School Girls Volleyball team will take on Fruita Monument at 11:30 a.m. and Chatfield at 2:30 p.m. to determine a regional champion.
Last week the girls played four games in a row, and on Friday they claimed the Front Range League title against the Poudre Impalas 3-1. The Front Range League includes schools from the Boulder and Denver areas, as well as all four high schools from Poudre School District.
Right now they are seeded first in their league, with only one loss to Eaton High School, who is in a different league. Now moving on to regionals, if they win against both teams, they will get the chance to compete as one of the top sixteen schools at the state championship.
“We do have some pressure, especially because we are the top seed in our bracket,” says Sydney Peterson, Senior Libero and right back row for Fossil’s Varsity team. “This week we have gotten to practice and keen in on our skills so we are ready for regionals.”
Getting to this point has not been easy. The girls volleyball season is usually in the fall, so being in the spring means conflicts with club volleyball schedules. This means they have to commit to morning practices rather than afternoon practices to accommodate those in club volleyball.
With athletes being back in school, players are more at risk of getting exposed to COVID-19 and having to quarantine. The girls have all been diligent to work around this obstacle by having flexibility and taking on new roles.
The team and coaches are optimistic about their performance this season. They are having “mental toughness meetings” so they are all on the same page heading into regionals. By holding each other accountable and working hard they have had a successful season so far.
