Sabercats earn biggest win of the year against top 5 opponent
On October 7, 2021, the Fossil Ridge soccer team beat the Legacy Lightning 2-1 in their best performance all year.
The Sabercats(7-4,4-2 in conference play) have earned their biggest victory, as Legacy(9-2,4-2) came into the matchup ranked third in the state, with their only loss coming earlier in the week against Fort Collins.
Fossil came in firing on all cylinders, as they kept Legacy on the defensive side of the ball. The Sabercats eventually broke through midway through the first half, as senior captain Will Boyle opened up the scoring from short range.
“I saw him[a Legacy defender] play it back, and my teammate was about to go for it and I was like ‘leave it leave it’, and then I just took the touch and finished. It was basically just instinct at that point,” Boyle said.
Fossil added another goal shortly after, as Pedro Peres threaded a pass through several defenders before eventually reaching midfielder Nathan Riess, who was able to tap the ball in for the easy score.
Fossil held onto that 2-0 lead up until the final three minutes, as Legacy eventually broke through with a goal of their own.
Even with Legacy cutting the deficit to one, there wasn’t enough time for the Lightning to get another offensive attack.
This game felt like a major turning point for Fossil, as they came out the most focused they looked all season.
“…this game we just really brought the energy and intensity to the game which helped us out a lot,” Boyle said.
The Sabercats will travel to play the 4-5-2 Fairview Knights on Tuesday, October 12.
